What is Hypnosis? (and how is it so effective?)
"Hypnos" in Greek means sleep.
Hypnosis is a state of mind, enhanced by physical relaxation, in which our subconscious is able to communicate with our conscious mind. This state of mind can be achieved either by oneself (self hypnosis) or with the help of a professional who can then utilise that state of mind to encourage beneficial change.
The conscious mind take in between 5 and 7 pieces of information per second whilst the unconscious part of our mind can absorb up to 2000 pieces of information per second. Therefore suggestions made to the unconscious mind are more effective for encouraging positive change. There are many misconceptions when it comes to hypnosis. Most of us have watched or participated in stage shows and I am often asked if its the same thing and the answer is no.
A common concern is that they will "lose control" in hypnosis. However, general consensus indicates that regardless of how deeply people may go in hypnosis, they actually remain in full control at all times. They are completely able to open their eyes, talk or leave the room if they so wish.
